The special exhibition “Ladies’ Choice!” (Damenwahl) at the Historisches Museum Frankfurt focuses on the pioneers of self-determination.
Creating a formative, staged framework for the topic of equal rights.
A clearly structured, contemporary exhibition design that focuses both on one of the most important chapters in the history of German democracy and on its current relevance.
Design, communication
The exhibition is divided into five connecting galleries that highlight the different phases. The colour scheme marks the thematic areas, which reconstruct the difficult path to equality as chronological chapters. To illustrate the different, sometimes controversial ideas within the women‘s movement, the individual galleries are presented by three illustrated activists and their positions.
“Today we are fighting for the equal participation of women in politics and the economy, for equal pay, for equal work and the same quality of work, for the reconciling of family and career, for the upgrading of social professions and for protection against violence”.
Dr. Franziska Giffey, former Federal Minister for Family Affairs and patron of the exhibition
The former draw attention to the present time with a clever presentation of dates, while the latter trace the city as the scene of the battle of the sexes. The last chapter is located at a fork in the road: one path leads into a narrow dead-end street, which gives an idea of the repressions of the Nazi era. The other path leads to interactive stations that invite visitors to participate and reflect.
