Right on time for the kick-off of this year’s Bundesliga season, the German TV brand “ZDFsport” gets a whole new look. Atelier Markgraph was commissioned to come up with a visually and technologically state-of-the-art set design for the three sports formats „das aktuelle sportstudio“, „ZDF SPORTreportage“ and „ZDF SPORTextra“.
“das aktuelle sportstudio” is a German television classic. Every Saturday for 50 years, the weekly magazine programme has been reporting on the world of sports to German viewers. For the first time on 19 August 2017, viewers will get to see the popular programme in an all-new, all-round dynamic look.
The leitmotif of the new studio is a swarm of specially developed LED modules, designed to imitate a typical stadium phenomenon: the flourishing of scarves on the terraces. Thanks to the circular positioning of the “LED swarm” and the extension of the tribune area for the studio guests, both the live audience and home viewers get to feel like they are in the middle of the action. The video-enabled modules are characterised by a clear design as well as a myriad presentation of possibilities in connection with the larger LED displays.
Familiar elements of the “sportstudio” brand were also given a multi-media spin. For instance, the popular “goal wall shooting duel” is cast in a new light with integrated sensors and LED technology. Even the hallmark studio clock is ushered into the digital age. Set modules such as the moderator’s podium or kinetic elements reflect the design of the LED swarm, helping to maintain a consistent look and feel. Black shiny surfaces further add a contrast-rich and contemporary aura to the sports experience.
With the “multi-media fan curve”, a game-changing multi-functional, experiential space was created, conceived to also be used for the other ZDF formats „SPORTreportage“ and „SPORTextra“.
No green screen, no virtual studio. Atelier Markgraph wanted the new face of ZDFsport to be a hybrid of digital media and a physical, experiential space. The result is a state-of-the-art, but simultaneously authentic studio design that gives ZDFsport a strong and easily recognisable new image that remains consistent right through to the on-air design. A useful tool box for the German broadcaster ZDF to frame countless, exciting sports moments long into the future.
